CHILDREN (5-12) TRADITIONAL  KARATE PROGRAM

Children and Karate

Karate training is a unique fitness program which teaches children to focus their mental and physical energies in
productive and non-violent ways. The most obvious benefits of karate training for children are physical
development, coordination training, and good health. There are also additional psychological and emotional
benefits, which are not immediately apparent. Often-mentioned results of karate training are greater focus,
higher self-esteem, increased self-discipline, calmness, and a more positive attitude toward life — besides, of
course, knowledge of self-defense. However, the main focus of karate training is perfection of character.

Karate has many aspects — mental, spiritual and physical. It is both an art and a sport. Whether your child
wants to pursue karate in the competitive arena of tournaments, for self-defense, for the art, or for the exercise
and mental gratification it brings, Traditional Karate Institute promises to deliver personalized attention and
maximum focus towards fulfilling your child’s goals.

Sofia traveled to Las Vegas in April to compete in her first major tournament, the 2010 Ozawa Cup. This year,
there were over 500 competitors from seven countries. Sofia won the silver medal in her first event, finishing a
close second to a boy from Ukraine. In her second event she moved up one age group to compete with the 8-9
year old girls, winning her second silver medal. Even with those successes, the highlight of the day came when
she had a long conversation with Teruo Chinen, a renowned Goju-ryu master who was an invited guest of the
tournament. The next day she competed in the Black Belt Finals, where the top-2 competitors from the advanced
divisions of each age group competed for the championship. As the first competitor on the big stage, she came out
strong, winning the gold medal for her age group in advanced kata, capping off a great tournament. Her
accomplishments were particularly remarkable in that she had just received her 6th kyu green belt two days
earlier! Sofia’s hard work and poise have really gotten her off to a great start, and none of it would be possible
without the selfless dedication and training of Sensei Juan.

On July 1, Sofia competed in the 2010 AAU National Championships in Albany, NY. She won the gold medal in
kata, silver in kobudo (weapons), and bronze in kumite, getting unanimous decisions in all three rounds of the kata
competition. She finished a close second with the bo, and scored an ippon in her second round kumite before
bowing out 2-1 in a hard-fought silver medal round. The event had more than 1600 competitors, with several large
dojos dominating the opening ceremonies. Sofia seemed to be most impressed, however, by the Albany Times
photographer who asked for her name and told her that she would be in the newspaper the next day.
