I have been a student of Shotokan since 1985. In this time I have
studied at various schools and formerly in the IKA and now JKA. I have
studied under sensei Juan Balmaceda for the past couple of years and it
has been the best learning I have ever had! I have felt as if I've learned
everything all over again except in a much more correct form and non-
compromised style. Sensei Balmaceda is a traditionalist and a protege
of the late sensei Nishiyama (the father of traditional Shotokan) and one
of his most accomplished and beloved pupils. Our school is one of the
very few remaining dojo's that rooted in "traditional" Shotokan as
opposed to "sport-karate" where much of the correctness in the
techniques are lost. Shotokan has always appealed to my intellectual
senses in that it is very basic and follows the laws of physics perfectly.
Power, solidity, and strength are acquired from the ground and
momentum and gravity are used in one's advantage in executing
techniques. There are many styles of martial arts which appeal to the
senses but I have always been partial to Shotokan. Unlike Muay Thai
kick boxing or other striking styles where knees and elbows are used
and fighting occurs at a much closer distance, one winds up taking quite
a bit of punishment while trying to give some and although this school of
thought might breed tougher athletes, as a physician I would tend to
think this would also lead to shorter careers and permanently maimed
bodies! The whole point of Shotokan is to keep away from your
opponent and incur no punishment while delivering maximum punishment
in a very efficient manner and ending it quickly! However, our school is
also rooted in the Budo concept of traditional karate that teaches
respect for others, peace, avoidance of conflict as much as possible,
and an underlying alertness and seriousness at all times even in a
relaxed state where one can switch immediately to "action" mode.
Sensei Balmaceda is like an open book and has a great love for teaching
this great art and for his students and freely shares all his great
knowledge and follows the learning of his pupils closely! Moreover, he is
patient, attentive to the individual needs of his students, and an effective
communicator I know very few quite like him. Training with my friend
and teacher Juan Balmaceda has been nothing short of incredible and I
feel that in a couple of years I learned more than I had in all my years of
training previously! I intend to continue training with and learning from
sensei Balmaceda indefintiely!
